Ziggy asked: I understand how water is able to dissolve ionic molecules, but I do not understand how organic solvents are able to dissolve substances that are bonded covalently. Are the bonds broken or is it a case of surrounding individual molecules to disrupt Van der Waal forces?
Keep any answers reasonably simple please!

kashanrat asked: For example, how do you work out the oxidation state of C2H5OH using an algebraic equation?
I always seem to get -2 for the oxidation state. Is it possible that oxidation state for Organic Compounds cannot be found this way?
Thanks in advance

Linda asked: We did it in class and saw a clear layer of what I assume is the organic solvent(light petroleum) on the top and the underneath layer was murky white. Why does this happen?

Sarah L Lawliet asked: My book says that organic compounds contain carbon, and all others are classified as inorganic, but then it says that carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbon disulphide, compounds in the cyanide group, and carbonate, and bicarbonate are inorganic, don’t these compounds have carbon? Why are they considered inorganic?! I’m so confused. Please help me out.
Thank you

Theresa asked: I’m working on naming some organic compounds and a list of priorities of functional groups according to IUPAC rules would be awesome. I’ve looked a little, but I can’t find a good one. Thanks!

Mike M asked: What’s a book that you would recommend that would serve as a good reference for a lot of the organic reaction mechanisms that you would see in undergraduate level organic chemistry classes (Organic I and II)? Thanks very much for your time!
