It is never to late to start your child on a healthy organic lifestyle. Gerber is fine for now, they are being bought out by nestle, which is known for making poor choices regarding health and their food. I currently use Gerber’s organic cereal, and organic baby food right along with they similac organic formula. My daughter is 5 months and I have became aware of all the hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and so on that is in our food and I have decided to start with organic. My other two 5 and 3 yrs old have always had the regular non organic foods until now and they are healthy. I just want to ensure that since they aren’t old enough to make healthy choices for them selves that I will make sure they get all the best foods.
Organic baby food is about 20-30 cents more than regular, but it is a personal choice to spend the extra money. I will be making most of my daughters baby food, but supplementing with the organic jarred stuff. elizabeth

I just read a article on this in American Baby. Most organic food is just a bunch of hype. And most is not ever 100% organic!! When it comes to baby food, it goes through such a process that whatever bacteria there was is gone. Stick to gerber, it is a good quality baby food and have you ever heard of a baby getting sick from it? I swear companies come up with stuff just to charge more and make more money!! They do not add anything to baby food. If you read the ingredients it says “apples and water”. Or “blueberries and water”. Final opinion, ORGANIC IS HYPE”. luv4jesus

My opinion is that organic is better my daughter has been having organic foods since she started solids. When I taste them I can just tell the apples’s are just apples nothing else. It makes me feel better knowing that she is getting the best Lizzi’s Mama

My kids and my grandkids all grew up on Gerber, and did just fine with it.

Organic is most likely more expensive, and may not be of higher benefit.

Making your own is fine, too, if you don’t have anything else to do with your time. If you do make your own, be sure you don’t add sugar or salt. kiwi

I do not buy organic baby food for my baby, but that is because I don’t eat organic food myself.

I think that the market for “organic” products has become incredibly silly. I think that eating organic fruits and veggies has some very good aspects, but now marketing and advertising makes you feel like you need to have everything organic. Organic baby clothes?

It is more expensive and I think it is becoming a con. I think advertising has become so ridiculous that it makes parents feel just awful and horrible if they’re baby isn’t riding in an organic carseat while wearing organic clothing, wrapped in an organic baby blanket, while they’re organic baby food is being heated up.

Again, I can understand why organic fruits and veggies are beneficial because of the method of growing crops, but beyond that, I think its silly. amber 18

I feel better about giving my baby’s Organic food. That’s just me. I would actually make my own baby food once a week. I would pick out a few veggies or fruit’s. Cook them until they were soft. Puree them in the blender & freeze them in Ice Cube tray’s. I would put some plastic rap over the top of them. I pop them out the day I use them, defrost them in the fridge. Then sit them out just before I feed the baby to get them room temp. It worked great for us!

It’s less expensive and there is actually more variety, I think to make your own. You get several servings out of a single vegetable or piece of fruit. I second the idea of freezing in ice cube trays. If you freeze it, it can be used for up to a year but it’s best within 3-4 months, so the shelf life is pretty good. If you start feeding your baby at 6 months, then by 4 months later, he would be eating more table foods than baby food, anyway.

By the way, you don’t have to give cereal if you don’t want to. Many people start with mashed avocado now.

And if you have the money, then organic is DEFINITELY worth it. If you don’t, it’s not the end of the world. Heather R

Its so much better to make your own then to get anything in the jar (you don’t have to load it down with cereal), I make my own, it really doesn’t take that much time to prepare. Get the book Blender Baby food from amazon or Barnes and noble and start there, you can also just Google baby food recipes and get some good stuff. I use the organic food from Earth’s best when I can’t make my own. ie when we are traveling or at the zoo or something. maxtonamvl

Organic could be more beneficial and costly, but it’s not required. Basically they’re just saying that they don’t use pesticides, etc., while the crops are growing. If you want to make your own, just get a small food processor or blender to grind the fruits and veggies up. You can freeze the food in ice cube trays (put some kind of wrap over it to avoid freezer burn). Then when you want a serving out for your baby, just take one cube out and microwave it. It’s always cheaper to make your own baby food than buy it, whether you use organic or not. It’s just more time-consuming. Tiberibesiba

I made my own organic baby food at home. It’s much cheaper and much more nutritous. I bought the baby food cube trays and pureed veggies, sweet potatoes, whatever we made for dinner (apart from meat), mixed in a little breast milk to thin it down a bit and froze the cubes. It worked great and was super easy. It’s much better for baby and your pocket book. It doesn’t take much time at all. You should try it. Gerber is crap. It’s processed and often packaged in harmful plastics. Olivia Rose
